THE FUTURE OF WINE: EMBRACING RESILIENCE, ELEVATING VALUE, FOSTERING INNOVATION
The 46st OIV Congress 2025, set to be hosted in the Republic of Moldova, proposes the theme “Charting the Future of Wine: Embracing Resilience, Elevating Value, Fostering Innovation.” This theme captures the essence of the contemporary challenges and opportunities facing the global wine industry as well as the core patterns for development of small countries as Republic of Moldova.
Resilience is a critical component as industry grapples with climate change and its impacts on viticulture. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events necessitates adaptive strategies to ensure sustainable wine production. This focus aligns with the broader industry trend of prioritizing environmental sustainability and resilience to climate change. The OIV has consistently underscored the importance of resilience in its resolutions, such as the recommendation on breeding grapevine varieties adapted to climate change (Resolution OIV-VITI 652-2021) and promoting sustainable wine growing practices (Resolution OIV-CST 518-2016). These measures aim to enhance the industry’s ability to withstand environmental changes and ensure long-term sustainability.
Elevating Value highlights the importance of creating and sharing value across all stakeholders, from small-scale producers in emerging wine regions like Republic of Moldova to major international market players. It emphasizes the need for equitable economic practices that support both local and global wine communities. As consumer preferences shift towards premium and sustainably produced wines, there is a growing demand for wines that offer both quality and value. The OIV highlights the importance of economic sustainability alongside environmental and social considerations, as seen in their sustainable viti-viniculture principles (Resolution OIV-VITI 641-2020). This inclusive approach ensures that value is accessible and beneficial to diverse participants in the wine sector, as well as the ultimate consumers and the cross-cutting impact on other sectors, such as tourism, etc.
Fostering Innovation underscores the role of technological advancements and disruptive practices in driving the industry forward. Innovations in low-alcohol and no-alcohol wines, digital engagement, and AI-driven agricultural practices are reshaping the landscape of viticulture, wine production and marketing. The OIV supports these advancements through resolutions that encourage sustainable production methods and the integration of new technologies (Resolution OIV-VITI 655-2021). Embracing these innovations is essential for meeting evolving consumer preferences and enhancing the overall competitiveness of the wine sector.
In conclusion, this theme encapsulates the strategic and collaborative efforts required to navigate the future of the wine industry, ensuring its sustainability, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. It sets a forward-looking agenda that encourages all stakeholders to work together in building a resilient, valuable, and innovative future for wine.
